Best Parks in Darwin: East Point Reserve, Litchfield Waterfalls and the Waterfront

Darwin's tropical landscape and national parks on the city's doorstep give residents access to some of Australia's most spectacular natural environments within a 20-minute drive of the CBD. East Point Reserve on the tip of the Larrakeyah Peninsula, 10 minutes from the CBD, is Darwin's most accessible natural reserve with walking tracks through monsoon rainforest, coastal cliffs, the Lake Alexander freshwater recreational lake and the East Point Military Museum. The reserve is one of the city's most popular morning and evening exercise locations, with views across the Beagle Gulf at sunset that are among the most spectacular in Australia. The Darwin Waterfront Precinct Wave Pool is a significant inner-city recreation facility with a lagoon swimming area protected from crocodiles and stingers. Casuarina Coastal Reserve north of the CBD has 10 km of coastline including a clothing-optional beach and a significant stretch of monsoon vine thicket. The Botanic Gardens on Gardens Road, adjacent to the CBD, are a 42-hectare tropical garden with a significant palm collection and a mangrove boardwalk on the coastal edge. Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve (70 km east) and the Kakadu National Park border (2 hours east) are accessible for serious natural area day excursions. In the dry season (May-October) outdoor green spaces across Darwin are transformed by reliable weather and spectacular sunsets.
